Camping RV & Outdoors

Practical guides for campers, RVers, van-lifers, and hikers — gear that lasts, systems that work off-grid, and trip planning that doesn’t assume an unlimited budget.
We treat camping and RV skills as preparedness by another name. If you can live comfortably out of a rig or a pack for a week, a power outage at home is an inconvenience rather than a crisis.

What you’ll find in these guides

Gear reviews and comparisons, RV systems explainers covering power, water, and waste, boondocking and off-grid guides, and hiking kit built around weight. We test what we can, cite specifications where we can’t, and we cover the RV audience seriously because almost nobody else in this niche does.

The numbers that matter

• 30-amp versus 50-amp. The first thing to know about any RV, and the source of most electrical confusion and damage.
• Ice retention days on a cooler. The honest comparison metric, and it correlates directly with wall thickness and weight.
• Fresh, grey, and black tank capacities. These set how long you can stay out before you need services.
• Base weight on a pack, everything except food, water, and fuel. The number serious backpackers optimize.

Where to start

New campers should spend first on sleep: a pad with a real R-value, a bag rated honestly, and a shelter that stays dry. New RVers should buy a surge protector and a water pressure regulator before anything else, then learn their tank capacities and power draw.
Keep the rig stocked in season rather than emptying it after each trip. It doubles as a ready-made evacuation vehicle. Current prices are on our camping and RV deals page.
